The CITY PLANNER Puzzle!
...a beautiful wooden version of a classic brain teaser!

You are given 9 wooden “building complexes” and 1 wooden "water tower" to work with. As the "City Planner," your job is to lay them all into a City Block.Start by placing the water tower in any of the 13 holes that are in the wooden base. Now see if you can fit the rest of the buildings in place. If you are successful, try it with the water tower in a different starting point. Keep going and see if you can find all 13 possibilities! This is a fun and attractive puzzle that is quite challenging regardless of where you first place the water tower. Displays beautifully on a desk, shelf or table!

Frik-n-Frak recently obtained a VERY limited number of these incredible Yoshimoto Cube No. 1 puzzles and are making one available through this fun "Dutch Auction" style sale RIGHT NOW!

The extremely collectable Yoshimoto Cube No. 1 consists of eight interconnected cubes that can be opened in endless ways, but form a single cube when linked together. Furthermore, the cube can divided into two cubes that can be transformed into two rhombuses with twelve faces each. "...a transformation of two stellated rhombic dodecahedrons from a cube.

In 1971, creator Naoki Yoshitomo conceived of a peculiar polyhedral dyad. The Yoshimoto Cube was featured in 1982 in the New York Museum of Modern Art collection. It was subsequently copied in Taiwan and sold in the 1980s as "SHINSEI MYSTERY" in bright colors rather than gold and silver of the original as we have here.

This is the original silver and gold Japanese design, not the cheaper Taiwanese version. Handmade by the artist himself, Naoki Yoshimoto.

Sadly, Mr. Yoshimoto has passed away and availability of this intriguing object is incredibly limited!

NEW Tavern Puzzle Difficulty Ratings

You will notice a new look to the Tavern Puzzles product page at Frik-n-Frak’s Curio Shack! Along with a new layout reflecting the new difficulty groupings, we are also offering new Frik-n-Frak Value Packs (discounted pricing when purchasing all puzzles within a specific grouping).

According to Tucker-Jones House, Inc. (the manufacturers of Tavern Puzzles), the Tavern Puzzle Collection has gotten so large that a it has out grown the difficulty level rating of Basic, Intermediate, Difficult, and Complex. While still following that general concept, Tavern Puzzles are now divided into eight groups that we hope will provide a better idea of how the designs relate to one another.

Gone are the four levels of Basic, Intermediate, Difficult and Complex. In their places are Groups 1 – 8. The puzzles remain in their same order, but the new ratings better explain how the designs relate to each other. With so many puzzles in the old “Difficult” level, and with some designs straddling two levels, the product difficulty classification was becoming unclear. The new Tavern Puzzle groupings hope to better answer the question “Which one is harder?”

For example, Dirty Dog and Double Bypass work the same way. However, most people find Double Bypass more difficult. Why? Because of the close tolerances! Double Bypass is now grouped with two other puzzles that share the same “close tolerance” characteristic.

Wise Guy is another example. It falls somewhere between the old “Intermediate” and “Difficult” levels. The new grouping places it with designs that also have interactive multi-step solutions.

Groups 1 through 8

Group 1 – Antique designs; simple moves. Basic
Group 2 – Original designs based on Group 1, with more moves. Basic
Group 3 – Multi-step beginning level. Intermediate
Group 4 – Multi-step with more moves. Intermediate-Difficult
Group 5 – Close Tolerances; precise moves. Difficult
Group 6 – False Steps, misdirection must be overcome. Difficult
Group 7 – Flexible chain used in solutions. Complex
Group 8 – Extremely difficult. Experience necessary. Complex

The Frik-n-Frak Tavern Puzzle Value Packs precisely follow the groupings above. An extra discount is applied when all puzzles within a group are purchased together.

Last year (2005) saw increases in raw material costs, transportation costs, energy costs, etc. As a result, there was a modest retail and wholesale price increase. Hello Bloggers! It's been quite some time since we've posted an update, but WOW! ...Have we ever been busy!

Both Frik AND Frak are about over their sicknesses. Jeeesh! Talk about a couple of months of being down! Yuk! We've both still got the lingering cough, but are WAY improved from even a few days ago.

Frik (or is he Frak?) ended up breaking a finger a week ago! Yup...what a klutz! For a few days it looked like a cartoon character finger! Although still a bit sore, it's much better. What a dope!

Frak (or is she Frik?) has masterfully decorated the Christmas tree! You should just see it! It's a real beauty! Although the instruction sheet said that the average time of assembly was 20 minutes, it was two and a half hours last night getting the 9 footer assembled! So, ok... maybe we're a bit slow. But, it's absolutely beautiful and was worth the effort! Very sparkly!

As mentioned in our previous entry, we have recently added 15 NEW products to our already extensive selection of wooden puzzles, brain teasers, mind benders and educational games!

In our previous blog entry, we took a look at SHUT THE BOX - the ultimate in world famous bar and tavern games, FOUR SQUARES PUZZLE - a handsome four piece wooden packing puzzle and the delightful 3 PIECE BURR - a new FAVORITE of Frik-n-Fraks!

This time, lets take a look at a few more of the NEW Wooden Puzzles that are available at Frik-n-Frak's . . .

SOLID PENTOMINOES
This is by NO MEANS a "new" puzzle! Although new to Frik-n-Frak's Curio Shack, Pentominoes have been around for a very long time! They are among the most popular wooden games chosen for use in the educational field as they encourage the use of one's imagination and stimulate creative thinking.

Some of the oldest polyform puzzles first formed as chessboards. An urban legend tells of the famous puzzler, Henry Dudeney, who in a course of a disagreement while playing chess, broke the chessboard over the head of his opponent. By remarkable chance, the result was 12 pieces each made up of 5 chess squares. With a bit of thought, it was discovered that the 12 pieces could be pieced back together to form a full chessboard. The pieces of the board were, in fact, the 12 pentominoes pieces.

Many people are able to look at these 12 different wooden shapes and identify letters in the alphabet: I,L,P,T,U,V,W,Y,Z. The letter "F" looks like it had a bit of an accident and the letter "N" takes a little imagination.

If you think building blocks is kid's stuff, try to build the original square pattern that the puzzle is delivered to you in. Try to build a rectangle size 6x10 blocks. Although there are 2339 solutions to the 6x10 rectangle, you'd be proud to find just one! A 5x12 rectangle has 1010 possible solutions! A 5x4x3 Cube has 3940 possible solutions, but there are only 264 possible solutions for a 6x5x2 cube. When you're up for the ultimate challenge, try to find 1 of only 2 possibilities for building a rectangle size 3x20!

Solid Pentominoes are a must have for any puzzler. They offer an endless variety of challenges at many different levels! The Solid Pentominoes are in stock and available HERE.
SALVADORE STRING PUZZLE
The Salvadore String Game is a Classic Disentanglement Puzzle. Also known as the Mouse Maze, Rat Trap and various other names, this is another of the more popular wooden games that we've recently added. Not only popular, it's a tough disentanglement puzzle!

The object is to get the mouse (the little wooden ball) and the string through the hole and ring maze and completely off the puzzle. One wrong move and you've made the job even tougher! Talk about a tangled mess!

The Salvadore String Puzzle displays very nicely in its upright position thanks to a handsome wooden base. Typically, this puzzle is offered without the base. Our version makes it perfect for a desk accessory or coffee table puzzle!

AJ PUZZLE
The AJ Puzzle is a LARGE 6 inch interlocking burr. It's just slightly smaller than our new TAVOR Puzzle, but still larger than most wooden games in its class. Its 12 wooden pieces, when properly assembled, form an octahedron that surround a wooden sphere. The AJ Puzzle is a good looking chunk of geometry that will display very nicely in your office or game room!

Once you decide it's time to stop looking at it, it's time to get to the challenge! First, you must disassemble the 12 pieces to remove the ball from the structure. Once this task has been completed, try to put it all back together again! Be sure your calendar is clear as this is NOT an easy brain teaser!

SHUT THE BOX - The ultimate in world famous bar and tavern games!

For over two hundred years Shut The Box has been a favorite game among the sailors of France, who introduced it to other countries through the seaport fraternity.

Shut The Box is an incredibly fun game for the whole family! It is highly educational for the younger ones, too! Heck...they won't even know that they're practicing mathematics!

Shut The Box is a dice game with no restriction to the number of players. The rules of "Shut The Box" are simple -- Expose all the numbers!

The first player throws both dice and then proceeds to shut off one or more numbers to the total value of the throw, e.g. 7 may be used to cover the "Number 7" Or, any combination of numbers totaling 7. The dice are thrown continuously by the same player until the total number thrown does not allow any numbers to be closed. At this point the score (total number of remaining open numbers) is recorded. When the uncovered numbers total 6 or less only one dice is thrown. The winner is the player who has the lowest remaining total. Any player who SHUTs THE BOX (closes all numbers) receives double stakes from the other players! The players concerned replay the round until a final decision is reached. The rules can be altered to suit the situation. For instance the winner may the person with the highest or lowest score.

FOUR SQUARES PUZZLE - a handsome four piece wooden packing puzzle!

The Four Squares Puzzle is made up of 4 wooden puzzle pieces. Each of the wooden pieces is made up of 2 quadrilaterals. Their shape is not exactly square! The challenge is to place all four pieces into the handsome wooden frame. All of the wooden puzzle pieces must sit flush against the bottom. It takes plenty of patience and perseverance to successfully re-package the wooden fram!

Object: Position the wooden pieces so they all fit flush into the frame.
Difficulty: Quite challenging!

Don't let the number of puzzle pieces fool you! This is a tough wooden puzzle! It takes several sliding moves just to remove the first piece. Persistence is key to taking apart the entire assembly. Now...just try putting it back together to its original form!

Shortly after 2:00 AM (yes...in the morning) local officials began to receive reports of a crowd gathering outside the virtual doors of Frik-n-Frak's Curio Shack. Officer Fife commented, "We initially didn't give it much thought. All sorts of weirdos hang out around that shack all the time!" However, the panic calls began to increase. Not only that, but there were more of 'em! At 4:00 AM (...in the morning) officials were dispatched to the scene to quiet what had turned into a loud and obnoxious crowd.

Mark Lubow of PayPal, FL was one of the many disgruntled shoppers that morning. Said Mark, "Look...I get this Frik-n-Frak propaganda in my email box on Sunday evening. In the time it takes me to hitch-hike to wherever the heck I am, the crazy sale is over!"

Fred Slicher, who had to sail in from Baltimore, wasn't all too happy either! "What the heck kinda sail is this?" pointing to the remains of the Virginia mountain tattered cloth that remained on the mast of his sale boat. "We do and we do and we DO for these kids, and this is the kind of sail that we get?"

Frik-n-Frak eventually quieted the angry mob by promising another 2 DAY SALE to be held Sunday and Monday (December 5th and 6th). "Typically our customers are so well behaved", said Frak. "Hopefully this type of situation can be prevented in the future."

Frik (of Frik-n-Frak's Curio Shack) indicated that the sale will be identical to the previous one. The Discount Code (which is used at final checkout) will be the same: 2DS@FNF. In addition, each day (starting Friday, November 26th) there will be three different products on sale at Frik-n-Frak's Curio Shack. These products will be featured on the main "Home Page" at http://www.frik-n-frak.com/. Each featured product will enjoy a ONE DAY ONLY discounted price! Both Frik and Frak suggest that you visit daily to take advantage of discounts of more than 25% on these featured products!

No arrests were made.

"It's long over due!", says Frik. "We've been at the edge of this cow field for too many years! We're excited about our new home!" Coming at just the "perfect" time of year (??), neither Frik or Frak anticipate any disruption in their exceptional customer service during this busy gift giving holiday season. "We've got a good plan in place!", says Frak.

Shipping of product will only be interrupted on the day of the move, Wednesday December 1st.

Frik-n-Frak welcome all those interested in helping them relocate! Says Frik, "We don't need all that much help. Mainly just packing stuff up, loading the U-Haul, moving the REAL heavy stuff and then getting everything moved into the new shack. Aside from that, we're pretty well set!"

It sounds like they really DO have a good plan in place!

Well...Here we go! Plunging into the blogging world without a clue as to what the heck we're doing! To those who know us even a little, this should come as no surprise. We're known for our uncanny ability (a gift if you will) to venture aimlessly into the unknown, bite off more than we can chew and to fearlessly go where no Frik (or Frak for that matter) has gone before.

We haven't a clue where this little experiment will take us. Perhaps it will be a way for us to keep folks informed of developments at Frik-n-Frak's Curio Shack? Maybe it will be a way to make new friends? Perhaps it will serve as a means to help others get to know us a little better? Maybe it will be a method for us to get to know ourselves a little better?

Like most of the things we get involved in, we have absolutely no idea why we're doing this. But everything we've read says that we should be doing this. It's the new thing after all! It's hipp...It's trendy! God knows we want to be cool! Frik has perfected the art of giving into peer pressure! Welcome to our Blog!
